My first Mac was a Blue & White G3 tower in 1998 after my mate, who's a graphic designer, convinced me to make the switch from PC's.

I can always remember how stunning and accessible it all was compared to the pot riveted beige boxes i'd been used to.

It had no floppy drive or SCSI ports either which was unheard of in those days, just a FireWire port which nobody in PC land had heard of.

Never looked back.

Nice tale.

Me? Never had anything but Macs since January 1985.

My transition was from all desktop to all laptop. The PowerBook G3 Lombard let me finally cut loose from desktop Macs... at the time it was a PowerMac 8500 with a G3 processor upgrade.

Mac build quality is FAR better than the vast majority of generic PCs.

Congratulations on your new 27" iMac! I just bought one on Black Friday and really love it - I got the quad-core i5 model and it's been an amazing performer.

Sykes, Apple products are definitely higher quality because they are assembled out of higher quality materials. The basic components (CPUs, disk drives, memory, etc) are the same, but the materials used to assemble them (aluminum cases, displays, etc) are of significantly higher quality.

Just walk into Best Buy and you'll see Windows computers at very tempting looking prices - but even a cursory glance at them shows they are using much cheaper and lower quality assembly techniques.

This is a lovely post :)

Hey, I was wondering if you could make an additional comment or make an extra blog entry about the following:

Compared to other major PC makers like Dell and HP, how does the build of Apple laptops compare?

I've been a long time Mac user. In fact, my first Mac was in 1989 with an SE/30. In subsequent years, the following Apple Macs came through: Centris 650 (throughout college), PowerBook 540c, PowerBook G3 (Lombard), iBook, PowerBook G4, MacBook Pro (first generation), MacBook Air. All of these laptops were used during graduate school.

Anyhow, it has always been my impression that Apple laptops in generally are better built with better components than the laptops of other major makers like HP and Dell. Is that true?

Cheers! Happy holiday!
