After gawking at the ipad for a few months and a lot of reading about it i found myself at the complicated task of getting one as fast as I could.
In the past, right after the ipad got announced, I wrote it was a bit of a failboat. But it turns out the ipad is quite a neat device. As I thought a bit after writing my initial comparison. It is in fact a massive iPod touch. It has no place in the laptop market or even the netbook market. It’s a media device like the iPod and iPhone. Period. You even need a real computer to activate it. That alone doesn’t make it a replacement.
Anyway. The iPad became available here last Friday. So I bought one Saturday. 16gb wifi. T-mobile tried to lure me into the world of 3G with some expensive contract. Wouldn’t allow a dual sim on my current iPhone contract. That, combined with their super poor 3G coverage quickly had me decide against it.
So, wifi only. It’s an excellent device. I have a bunch of games on it. Synced my bookmarks and email and have been happily ipadding for the past day or so. Yay!
What i did notice… The pixel doubler to make any app work is not so nice. The iBooks offering is poor. Many developers of apps charge for their iPad version. Even if you already have the iPhone version and the iPhone chargers are not really compatible with the iPad.
They lack power output, just like a regular high powered USB 2.0 port. Charging goes super super slow.
Other than that it’s been fun so far. I’m getting into Geometry Wars. Aquired an IRC client, I’m playing with the background picker and flip through a bunch of photos. It’s fun. I’m even writing posts on my blog (this one) with it.
I found out that most of my apps are not iPad optimized and looking at the horrible pixel doubling the iPad does is not fun either. So it’s been fun plowing through the itunes store again looking for cheap and good alternatives. I hope the iBooks feature catches on and publishers get over themselves so it’s actually fun and not like DVDs are now. And of course a better offering of books. I hope comics too and magazines… *dreams*
