The never ending story…

Written by Arnan on October 17, 2008 – 12:28 pm

So recently on a clients computer i found this great game, or so i was told by a colleague.
Since it was freeware we copied it and now i’m hooked. I started a new game that day and am still playing that very same game. We’re over 6 weeks past and i’ve been playing regularly with a 2-4 hour per day average.

Amazing isn’t it? Which game you ask? Transport Tycoon Deluxe. What? yea a 14 year old game. And it rocks!! It’s one of those gems that just won’t bore as there is always something to do, expand or improve. New business opportunities are common and it’s just fun to toy with trains, planes, boats and vehicles and their infrastructure.

Here is just a minor screenshot from what i’ve built over the past weeks. It’s a somewhat complex set of tracks around a train station. Over 20 trains race in, out and through it every couple of minutes going to more than 10 surrounding stations delivering goods to a factory there, or just bringing coal for the cities or passengers, mail, steel, livestock or grain to and from the various stations. To accommodate the city growth i’ve built bus stops all over the bigger cities from which people can easily move to and from a lot of places. Just to give you a slight idea.

The most fun about this game is that it just never stops. As noted above there is always something to do. With games like Sim City, the map gets full after a while. Or it just gets boring once you’ve got all things set up. All games have limitations and so does Transport tycoon ofcourse, but the map for one is so immensely huge that even on a medium sized map i’ve been busy for 6 weeks. Imagine if the map was 4 times larger how small a portion i would use. I think if i would cram everything into a corner i would use one quarter of the map now! Another great thing is the diversity, scattered over the map are autonomous towns and many many industries of all kinds. And your task is to make money of that. So you can deliver over 20 types or materials/goods to various industries or set up a supply chain to a city. Say, iron ore to a steel mill which produces goods from that which you can then deliver to a city. The city grows because of that and thus eventually will need a bus system, or connections to another city and so on.

So! Get it, play it… Get addicted!

iPhone! one week in…

Written by Arnan on August 12, 2008 – 10:14 pm

Soooo here’s a few thoughts, ha! About the iPhone 1st gen… One year late. But a review none the less.
It’s sluggish, the headphone jack is on the wrong side and it’s supercool!

Right… Well i noticed that it responds like a regular mac, ‘it has to actually load an app’ as my colleague calls it. I think it’s just annoying having to wait 1 second or so before i can browse my contacts. Or before the preferences show when i tab it’s icon.

T-mobile having the exclusive rights to the iPhone gives me updates specific for T-mobile users. So-called “carrier updates”. I think we all received them at some point. The funny thing is i’m not an official iPhone user for them, i use a pwnt 1st gen iPhone and do not have an iPhone specific contract (yes that’s another story). However T-mobile seems to think i do and sent me an update for their APN settings, network name and more of those carrier specific things. No, it’s not an update you get with any phone since it went via iTunes…

Another thing is, being used to the iPod touch that i constantly hold the phone upside down because of the headphone plug. The Touch has it on the bottom, which is much better in my opinion. The iPhone has it on the top.

And i went on a quest for headphone glory only to find that not many shops and stores sells cool, nice and proper headphones for the iPhone.
Luckily i found these:

Sexy! They’re in-ear so i hope they don’t keep falling out of my ears like the Apple ones do… They don’t fit at all! :(

And the ringtones are a bit lame… So i actually had to SSH into the damn thing and insert a bunch of custom crafted files into it… Ever heard of .caf files? I didn’t… Anyway, it’s just a mp4 in disguise… Silly apple peoples.

But it’s all sorted, i guess :)

So today I finally got the iphone from my co-worker…
Neat! Resetting the thing turned to be a troublesome task and I had to ‘pwn’ the phone again to use it.

But it works now!!!!

This is my first post from the phone. Whee!

Events v1.0

Written by Arnan on May 21, 2008 – 9:18 pm

Woohoo! I have made a big update again and decided it was time to wrap things up regarding the ‘beta’ versions. Allthough Events is pretty stable since version 0.4 it still always was a 0.something version. Indicating an incomplete product.

This is over! After 3 years we have reached version 1.0! And im proud to announce this new version which brings some significant changes.

Changes for this version:

  • [update] Completely redesigned manage page
  • [change] %time% changed to %starttime%
  • [new] End time for events
  • [new] Sort order for manage page
  • [new] New tags %endtime% and %duration% for the template
  • [fix] Multiple minor bugfixes in showing data on the events page
  • [fix] Uninstaller no longer uses die() but redirects to plugin page upon uninstalling

Also in order to upgrade to this version you need to edit the database. *eek!* yea… But no worries. I have an easy fix that too!

Go into your phpmyadmin, or whatever database tool you use, and run these 2 queries:
!!! MAKE A BACKUP IF UNSURE AND CHECK THE TABLE NAME !!!

ALTER TABLE `wp_events` ADD `theend` INT( 15 ) NOT NULL AFTER `thetime` ;
UPDATE `wp_events` SET theend = thetime WHERE theend = '';

These queries are what i used to upgrade and are generated by phpmyadmin.
This effectively upgrades the Events table to allow ‘enddates’ to be set and sets all the existing events enddates (which do not exist) to the start date. If you don’t all start dates will equal 0 and thats way in the past on january 1 1970… We don’t want that now do we… So be sure to run both queries! BUT ONLY ONCE or other things go awe.
