So i got lost this week…
Written by Arnan on November 6, 2008 – 8:02 pmSo i got had a job interview on Monday, which didn’t go very well i think, and thought i’d take a little shortcut back to the trainstation. Not thinking that one through i stumbled off in a completely wrong direction and found that out after like 10 minutes of walking. Nothing i recognized had appeared yet so i looked like a lost tourist.
Luckily some idiot didn’t protect his wifi signal so i could borrow his internet for a minute to pinpoint my location (in combination with the GSM signal of course) and i returned to the trainstation shortly after that, unharmed.
iPhone to the rescue ![]()
This would make the iPhone even better…
Written by Arnan on September 24, 2008 – 10:38 pmAllow me to download parts of maps and store them for offline usage. Say i want to go some place and need directions, it would be nice to save that map, showing the route. View it offline, en route. Especially for me, since i have no “real” internet on my phone when i’m out of Wifi’s grasp.
Another nice thing would be to share contact information. So why not allow me to tab a button “share” when viewing a persons information and picking one of 2 options “email” or “sms” from the menu that would slide up from the bottom. And send a vCard to someone by mail and a textformatted SMS to someone requiring that information.
Obviously MobileMail should allow importing of vCards to make it really work.

Written by Arnan on September 14, 2008 – 11:28 amLast night i’ve upgraded my iPhone to software 2.1 with pwnagetool. The upgrade went all good. But restoring my backup (sms, photos and settings) didn’t go so well :(.
Somehow the new firmware kept crashing after the backup was put back. I had several backups and all failed :(. So i spent the evening setting up the iphone and trying to memorize my brilliant sort order for al the apps.
All is good again! Woohoo!

Written by Arnan on August 12, 2008 – 10:14 pmSoooo here’s a few thoughts, ha! About the iPhone 1st gen… One year late. But a review none the less.
It’s sluggish, the headphone jack is on the wrong side and it’s supercool!
Right… Well i noticed that it responds like a regular mac, ‘it has to actually load an app’ as my colleague calls it. I think it’s just annoying having to wait 1 second or so before i can browse my contacts. Or before the preferences show when i tab it’s icon.
T-mobile having the exclusive rights to the iPhone gives me updates specific for T-mobile users. So-called “carrier updates”. I think we all received them at some point. The funny thing is i’m not an official iPhone user for them, i use a pwnt 1st gen iPhone and do not have an iPhone specific contract (yes that’s another story). However T-mobile seems to think i do and sent me an update for their APN settings, network name and more of those carrier specific things. No, it’s not an update you get with any phone since it went via iTunes…
Another thing is, being used to the iPod touch that i constantly hold the phone upside down because of the headphone plug. The Touch has it on the bottom, which is much better in my opinion. The iPhone has it on the top.
And i went on a quest for headphone glory only to find that not many shops and stores sells cool, nice and proper headphones for the iPhone.
Luckily i found these:

Sexy! They’re in-ear so i hope they don’t keep falling out of my ears like the Apple ones do… They don’t fit at all!
And the ringtones are a bit lame… So i actually had to SSH into the damn thing and insert a bunch of custom crafted files into it… Ever heard of .caf files? I didn’t… Anyway, it’s just a mp4 in disguise… Silly apple peoples.
But it’s all sorted, i guess ![]()
‘Pwnt’ my phone, who cares?!
Written by Arnan on August 8, 2008 – 12:45 pmFor one, i don’t… I noticed that i keep going to the app store to look for nice apps or when i think of something i automatically end up in the app store. Not necessarily getting something but still i don’t even think to look in Cydia, the new installer app for unlocked iPhones.
I opened the thing once because i was curious what it looked like and did some updates because Cydia told me there were updates. After reviewing them i saw it was a new database engine and some xml things the iPhone uses all over the place so i figured it would be a good thing to do. And it was, the contacts application seems to be a bit more reactive now…
But other than that… I briefly looked into installing BSD-subsystem and openSSH, but on a second thought i went like “fuck it”. I simply have no interest in the stuff in there. Even though i’m not sure what is in there… All i want it for is that my phone is unlocked so i can use my Simcard in it.

So today I finally got the iphone from my co-worker…
Neat! Resetting the thing turned to be a troublesome task and I had to ‘pwn’ the phone again to use it.
But it works now!!!!
This is my first post from the phone. Whee!

Written by Arnan on July 14, 2008 – 10:40 pmSo i ordered an iPhone last friday at my work. Today i asked about it to check if all the appropriate forms were available when things arrived so i could get started and have my current contract upgraded and activate the iPhone.
Then things went downhill from there… I appears that with the current TOS i am allowed to upgrade to the iphone contract at any time but not collect an iPhone not even for a higher fee because my current contract is not on it’s end yet. Luck would have it it renewed for 2 years last february. Bummer!
I had our iPhone specialist check the possibilities for me, it seems the only possibility is to end my current contract and buy myself out of it in order to upgrade and ‘deserve’ the iPhone.
Well fuck that… Tomorrow i’m cancelling my order, wait for a few weeks, get a simlock free model from Belgium or something and am seriously considering to go with vodafone for the whole deal. I just have to find a cheap way out of my T-mobile contract, but as things are looking now that’s no biggie as my ‘minimum contract time’ has passed a while ago.
Vodafone has an affordable contract with 50 minutes/TXT messages for €12,50 a month and can be expanded with +/-3mbit internet for €9,50 a month extra. Which is kind of what T-mobile offers except it has 150 minutes instead of the 50 vodafone offers. I don’t need 150 minutes though, so that’s ok. Also 12,50 and 9,50 is cheaper per month than the T-mobile contract. So i spend a lot more on the phone, yea i know… €525 or something, but i think it’s kinda worth it since it’s also an iPod and PDA and stuff. I never expected the iPhone to be €79 anyway, which is T-mobiles price.
[update 2 days later]
Additional research shows that i’m stuck with this contract since renewals aren’t actually renewals but “new” contracts after the old one. Thus i never made over the minimum of 12 months and cannot bail out. So i’m fucked and stuck with T-mobile for the time being. I might as well get an 1st gen iPhone then if i cannot use any of the 3g functions or even GPRS since my Flex contract only has calling minutes and no internet stuff what-so-ever. Bummer!
Is it worth it?
Written by Arnan on July 7, 2008 – 12:41 pmThe iPhone 3G is coming next friday and i’m still in doubt if i should take their 29.95 p/m contract or try to get it on a cheaper contract and pay more for the phone.
I just read that i get unlimited access to their wifi hotspots as well. Which is nice, means that i can hook up my macbook pro too on every train station or whatever *tempting tempting*. Just trying to get a map of the covered area by those hotspots to see if it’s a good deal for me.
